Hanyecz’s pizzas have got very very expensive. It’s now worth $300 million as the world celebrates the first real-world transaction with BTC.
The first Bitcoin transaction took place on May 22, 2010, when Laszlo Hanyecz used Bitcoin to pay for two pizzas. The day has gone down in history, not because of the transaction, but because of the price: the Florida man paid 10,000 Bitcoins for the two pizzas, which is now worth over $300 million.
Laszlo Hanyecz offered to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for two historic pizzas on May 22, 2010, now celebrated as the ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’.
The Florida guy reached out on the Bitcoin Forum to get the pizzas. “I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day,” he wrote.
“I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!”
Hanyecz also mentioned his favourite toppings: “I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire. If you’re interested please let me know and we can work out a deal.”
Today, we would wonder why did he buy Pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoins. And that’s what a user named BitcoinFX on the Bitcoin Talk asked, “Are you getting hungry or do you just like pizza?”
Then Hanyecz replied, “I just think it would be interesting if I could say that I paid for a pizza in bitcoins.”
Finally, a British man accepted Hanyecz’s offer and purchased the two pizzas for him. Surprisingly, the Bitcoin recipient also managed to do huge bargain, paying only $25 for two Papa John’s pizzas, while receiving 10,000 Bitcoins that was worth roughly $41 on that day.
Hanyeczs’ pizzas have become increasingly expensive over the years. The two pizzas were worth $10,000 nine months after the purchase when Bitcoin reached parity with the US dollar, and $4.4 million in 2016, the sixth anniversary of Bitcoin Pizza Day. Bitcoin is currently trading at just over $30,000, making the pizzas worth $300 million.
According to Laszlo Hanyecz, the transaction was done to test out whether a purchase could be accomplished. “It wasn’t like Bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool,” Hanyecz told the NY Times.
The anniversary of the momentous day is always a big deal among Bitcoin fans, and this year’s event appears to be no exception. Twitter is filled with #BitcoinPizzaDay. A lot of offers by Pizza cafes and other restaurants can be easily seen. Many Pizza parties are organized.
A very special celebration is being organized by PizzaDAO. Today (On May 22, 2022), PizzaDAO is hosting anniversary events in over 75 countries, including the United States, Argentina, South Korea, Ethiopia, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, among others.
The events will draw a variety of supporters, including 13-time World Pizza Champion Tony Gemignani, Seth Green, Steve Aoki, the Dogecoin team, and comedians Cheech and Chong, among others, in addition to an NFT drop and a charitable campaign.
