Space Telecommunications Inc. (STI) has deployed three satellites running the Spacecoin protocol, marking a significant step toward building a decentralized internet network in low-Earth orbit. The launch took place aboard a rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
A Move Toward Decentralized Satellite Connectivity
The satellites form the first generation of the CTC-1 constellation, which aims to demonstrate decentralized network operations in space. STI said the system is designed to support a new architecture capable of delivering permissionless and censorship-resistant connectivity worldwide.
CTC-1 builds on the earlier CTC-0 mission, which transmitted an encrypted blockchain message between Earth and space. That experiment showed that blockchain operations can maintain integrity within space-based communication systems.
Validating Inter-Satellite Communication
The CTC-1 mission will test two major capabilities needed for decentralized satellite internet. The first is maintaining uninterrupted user connections as spacecraft move rapidly across low-Earth orbit. The second is enabling direct satellite-to-satellite communication with minimal reliance on ground stations.
STI said these capabilities are essential for building open architecture standards that allow future constellations to interoperate. The satellites were integrated into the launch through Arrow Science and Technology, with STI holding relevant regulatory approvals for orbital deployment and operation.
Expanding Infrastructure for Global Access
STI founder Tae Oh said the launch represents progress toward making connectivity more resilient and widely accessible. “With multiple satellites now in orbit, we’re proving that internet services need not be centralized,” Oh said. “This is a step toward a world where everybody, everywhere has access to the basic human right of internet access.”
STI plans to run live connectivity demonstrations after validating the inter-satellite communication system. Several government and telecom partners have signed agreements to test the network under real-world conditions.
Introducing a Decentralized VPN Layer
Alongside the satellite infrastructure, the Spacecoin ecosystem is developing Starmesh, a decentralized VPN designed for private and encrypted internet browsing. STI expects early testing to begin next year, allowing users to trial how distributed communication networks may operate across satellite-based systems.
