Distributed Name System Creates A New Decentralized Identity For Tezos

  • DNS initially wanted to create Ethereum identities, but soon found Tezos as a more interesting alternative.
  • “Tezos is just plain superior to Ethereum. It’s fast, it’s cheap, it’s green. It already does Proof of Stake. Stably. For a long time.”

Distributed Name System allows Tezos blockchain users to create their own decentralized identity. Tezos blockchain users can link their on-chain identity to a web page (username.dns.tez), which also works as a wallet address. Users can use their DNS identity as their decentralized Linktree page, business-card, artist NFT showpage, or any way they see fit.

DNS User Profile

The user interface of DNS profile is very similar to a basic centralized social media page. You can add your name (or alias, you decide how to call your profile), short bio, country, avatar, cover photos, etc.

All the info that you add is public. It’s up to you what you share, and it can be pseudonymous. Your DNS identity will be created around your wallet address, so whatever you do on-chain can be tracked to your DNS identity.

Getting on this platform is easy, you simply log in with your wallet, and get a “link in bio” page (like Linktree), hosted on Web3 automatically. You can use it to show your links, and your HicEtNunc NFTs.

DNS aims to enable you to use your DNS identity in dApps too.

“We’re also working with both IDX and SpruceID, to make sure that your profile data can be integrated in as many dApps as possible.”

DNS uses a W3C standard called “Decentralized Identities” (DIDs). Every user on DNS gets a DID, by logging in with their wallet. Being Decentralized, means that info is stored immutable and trustless. And what’s unique about DNS is:

“there is no backend, so security and user trust is easy. DNS is using a combination of public, open standards: wallets to login and create a DID, Ceramic to store user data and websites, and IPFS to serve content.

It is 100 percent Decentralized. Everything happens in your browser, talking directly to Ceramic, Textile, and IPFS. It’s very similar to how dapps such as ENS or MyEtherWallet work. And because it’s on IPFS, your data is public, and user-verifiable”

Why DNS Prefers Tezos Over Ethereum?

DNS initially wanted to work on Ethereum identities, but soon found Tezos as a more interesting alternative.

“DNS.xyz brings identity and community to the decentralized web. We’re starting with Tezos first: we want to give every Tezos user a personal website, a username.dns.tez, and a way to show their NFTs.”

“Tezos is just plain superior to Ethereum. We were surprised. It’s fast, it’s cheap, it’s green. It already does Proof of Stake. Stably. For a long time.”

According to the DNS team, developing smart contracts is easier on Tezos than Ethereum’s Solidity. And the Tezos’ FA2 standard:

“does everything that ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 do. It’s less complex, consumes less gas, and much easier to design minting for”

The Tezos community was another important factor that mahes DNS move their focus to Tezos. Developers and artists have been extremely welcoming and supportive.

“It’s becoming the home to hackers and artists who want to try new things in crypto. Things that aren’t defi and gambling. It’s a place where tinkerers, creators and curious minded people can play. And it’s great! It’s where early adopters are. It’s where the energy from Bitcoin 2011 and Ethereum 2016 is.”

Early access testers

The DNS team is currently looking for early access testers. Interested people can join the private beta on the DNS Discord here.
