Bitcoin, Crypto, NFTs and the Metaverse have now entered into mainstream. Web3 is a concept for the next generation of the internet based on blockchain technology, which incorporates concepts such as decentralization and token-based economics.
Blockchain, the underlying technology upon which they operate on, has the potential to be a catalyst for a positive change and shape the future — the way we transact, play, and trade. According to a recent study, the popularity of the blockchain technology is on the rise with over 90% European and U.S.-based businesses exploring ways to integrate blockchain technology in their operations. And not just that, businesses across the globe are putting in efforts to broaden the scope of the technology.
Another study from Gartner predicts that 25% of consumers will spend at least one hour a day engaging with the metaverse for work, shopping, education, social or entertainment purposes by 2026.
In addition to banking and finance, many other industries are also implementing blockchain technology, including healthcare, gaming, real estate, and supply chain. The list is long. This is why web3 space is so hot right now and it will have more lucrative job opportunities than other sectors in the coming years.
Interestingly, fresh graduates as well as industry professionals are also curious about the job scenario in Web3. And, they want to find out how to land a career in Web3 and its sub-sectors, including Metaverse, Crypto, and NFTs.
Ravi Kumar of AlexaBlockchain caught up with Jay Wong of CB Recruitment to learn more about why Web3 and Crypto are fascinating industries to work in, and how people can kickstart their careers in these areas.
Jay Wong is a Global Partnerships Manager for CB Recruitment, a Coin Bureau venture. Based in London, UK, his background is as a VP of Marketing, Social Media Manager, Rent to Rent Property Business owner, Part Qualified Accountant, and 10+ years in corporate recruitment!
His Passions are pretty wide and far-reaching but as a taster, this is what you’ll find Jay doing in the very little time away from his day job – Gaming (PC/Xbox/Playstation), Anime lover, Sitting up till 3am on Opensea/Looksrare, Opening 16 different wallets and exchanges a day to check portfolios, Doggo Dad to two pugs called Pikachu and BB-8, Real life Dad to a little boy called Keanu (Named after Keanu Reeves!), Pretending to go to the gym, trying to catch up on sleep as Web3 refers to the number of hours of sleep you get when working in the sector.
Hello Jay! Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Maybe we can start with you giving us a brief intro to yourself and your background.
I’m a Web3 node connector – I help to connect people, projects, and venture capital across Web3 and the general blockchain universe. Helping to run the team that finds great people in web3, but also helping to find synergies within all the various connected subsidiaries and family brands to continue to advance mainstream adopters.
How did you get into the crypto industry? What attracted you to it?
I fell down the proverbial rabbit hole, after initially investing in $DOGE back in 2018, and since then have delved far deeper than ever expected into the Crypto-verse, boring my wife and friends constantly with the newest whitepaper, whilst also looking to network with everyone within the space so that I’m not the guy in the corner at the party stroking the proverbial dog in the corner
Since then, I’ve been involved and actively helping to drive mainstream adoption across other projects and DAO’s, connecting people, projects, and VC opportunities whilst also supporting great projects within the likes of the AllStarsWomenDAO, Impact NFT Alliance, Xtreamly.io, and many more.
What do you think is appealing about it for the next generation as an industry to join for their careers?
I think anyone who’s passionate about anything can find something with the crypto-sphere to interest them, but from a general standpoint – the general benefits of working in the industry are the ability to work from home,
What advice do you have for people wanting to start working in crypto and web3?
Always show your passion for the space on your resume, get involved as an active discord member, go to events, and network, this space is so young still, and the amount of people hiring people who are just passionate about blockchain but have transferable skills is still high. In 5 years’ time, I won’t be able to say the same thing.
From 2011 onwards when things really started to be built, there are a lot of great people who are already in the space, but most with over 7/8 years of experience have built their own product/service now….know what that means… there’s an experienced candidate market of 3-4 years right now. That’s it.
6 months of volunteering as a discord moderator, or social media executive, or anything else goes a LONG way.
Where can people learn more about crypto and web3?
