  • A staggering 60% of online daters suspect they’ve matched with a bot, while 61% are concerned about encountering fake profiles.
  • AI-driven scams and botfishing are making it harder to find genuine connections.
A survey of 90,000 users found that 90% of online daters want human verification on dating apps.
  • Sam Altman’s World Network advocates for human verification to combat bots and restore trust in online dating.

In an era where digital interactions increasingly mediate human relationships, the quest for authentic connections has become both a challenge and a priority. World Network, Co-founded by Sam Altman, today unveiled findings from the largest human-only online dating survey to date. The survey sheds light on user concerns and preferences in the evolving landscape of online romance.

The survey, encompassing over 90,000 participants, reveals urgent need for human verification in dating platforms, with 90% of respondents expressing a preference for systems that confirm users are real individuals. Additionally, 66% believe that current dating apps lack adequate measures to verify genuine users, and 61% are apprehensive about encountering bots or fake profiles. Notably, 60% have suspected or discovered that a match was a bot or AI, and 26% admitted to flirting with a chatbot, either knowingly or unknowingly.

These insights highlight a growing tension in the online dating sphere: while technology facilitates connections, it also introduces challenges related to authenticity and trust.

The proliferation of AI in dating platforms has been a double-edged sword. On one hand, AI enhances user experiences by offering personalized matches and improving profile suggestions. On the other, it contributes to the rise of fake profiles and automated interactions, leading to user skepticism.

The integration of AI into dating apps is a significant shift in how individuals seek and establish romantic connections.

Leading platforms are increasingly adopting AI to enhance user experiences. For instance, Grindr plans to implement machine-learning features in 2025, including a potential “wingman” chatbot to assist users in crafting engaging messages. Bumble is developing AI-powered tools for profile creation and messaging, while Tinder is rolling out AI-assisted matching features. Hinge is also leveraging AI for matching and coaching, aiming to provide users with more personalized dating experiences.

Despite these advancements, the industry faces challenges. Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, and Plenty of Fish, has reported declining user engagement and economic uncertainties. In response, the company appointed Spencer Rascoff as the new CEO, signaling a strategic shift towards AI-driven transformation. The company forecasts that substantial growth from AI initiatives will become evident only in 2026, indicating a long-term commitment to integrating AI into their platforms.

The impact of AI on online dating extends beyond user engagement metrics. A study by Zion Market Research predicts that the global AI in the dating app market will reach $11.24 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 95%. This growth is driven by the increasing adoption of AI-powered features that enhance user experiences, such as personalized match suggestions and improved communication tools.

However, the integration of AI also raises concerns about authenticity and the nature of human relationships.

The same survey by World Network revealed that 26% of respondents have flirted with a chatbot or AI, either knowingly or unknowingly. This statistic indicates the blurred lines between human and automated interactions in the digital dating landscape.

As AI becomes more sophisticated, distinguishing between genuine human connections and AI-generated interactions may become increasingly challenging.

The future of online dating will likely involve a delicate balance between leveraging AI to enhance user experiences and maintaining the authenticity of human connections. Platforms that can navigate this balance effectively, perhaps by implementing robust human verification systems and transparent AI features, may gain a competitive edge in the evolving market. As the digital dating landscape continues to evolve, the quest for genuine human connection remains at its core. This shows the enduring complexity and depth of human relationships.
