The DFINITY Foundation has launched a $5 million grant to support projects leveraging decentralized artificial intelligence (DeAI) on the Internet Computer blockchain (ICP). Unlike other blockchains that rely on centralized cloud providers for AI plug-ins, the Internet Computer blockchain can run true DeAI, making it fully decentralized and self-contained. The goal is to enable AI models to run on a decentralized and permissionless network, providing trust and transparency.

Dominic Williams, Chief Scientist and Founder of the DFINITY Foundation, emphasized the significance of the DFINITY Foundation’s initiative in bringing together AI and blockchain technology.

While there has been considerable buzz surrounding AI and blockchain, the integration of AI onto blockchain platforms is still in its early stages, Dominic noted.

Looking ahead, the integration of blockchain and AI holds the potential to address critical challenges related to trust in AI systems. Blockchain technology can play a crucial role in fostering trust in AI by ensuring the transparency and integrity of data and decisions.

According to DFINITY Foundation, running AI on the Internet Computer offers several advantages. Firstly, it allows AI to operate in an open environment on a public network. Secondly, it enables the separation of AI models and data used for training or inference, facilitating collaboration between parties that don’t trust each other within an open marketplace. Additionally, AI on the Internet Computer can be integrated with Web3, where it can be called by on-chain blockchain code known as smart contracts.

Future developments will introduce full AI “smart contracts” that offer mathematical guarantees about the training data and responses produced by specific AI models.

The $5 million grant aims to encourage the development and integration of AI applications on the Internet Computer blockchain. Several projects on the ICP platform already utilize AI, such as IC1101 for chat interactions, Dmail for automated message responses, Itoka for tokenizing AI-generated music, EMC for distributing compute power to AI developers, and StageAI, a comprehensive Web3 AI platform.

By running AI models on the Internet Computer, trust is enhanced through verifiable and secure execution. The platform enables the separation of AI models and data, fostering collaboration and openness. Compared to Web2 platforms, the integration of AI into the Internet Computer platform provides broader availability of models and data, increased trustworthiness, and greater ownership and transparency.

The DFINITY Foundation’s grant initiative seeks to advance the development of AI on the Internet Computer blockchain, contributing to the broader adoption of decentralized AI and paving the way for future advancements in combining blockchain and AI technologies.
