Theo, an onchain finance platform founded by ex-Optiver and IMC traders, today announced thSLVR, tokenized silver that pays holders the lease income the metal earns. It launches with more than $40 million in silver leases committed, making it the largest onchain silver product at launch. That lease book is already doing work: it forms part of the yield engine behind thUSD, Theo’s stablecoin, and thSLVR gives holders direct access to it when it goes live.

Tokenized silver has not kept pace with gold. The tokenized gold market runs to several billion dollars across multiple products, while tokenized silver is a fraction of that. Where existing silver tokens pay a return, it’s generally a share of platform trading fees rather than income earned by the metal itself.

Silver does traditionally pay an income, just not to those who hold it. Refiners, mints, and industrial fabricators borrow silver constantly to run production without taking price risk, and they pay a lease rate to do it. That income has gone to bullion banks and dealers. The owner pays to store the metal at a higher cost than gold per dollar of value because the same money buys far more bulk, plus 0.3% to 0.5% a year to hold it through an ETF.

thSLVR is the third market Theo is bringing onchain after Treasuries and gold, extending its leasing model into silver. It also broadens what sits behind thUSD, Theo’s yield-bearing stablecoin, which earns by lending physical metal to commercial demand while hedging away price exposure, so returns don’t depend on which way the metal moves. The $40 million silver book announced today is already part of it.

thSLVR puts holders on the lending side of the silver lease market. Silver backing the token is leased to established institutional counterparties on standard market terms, with the credit backed by a parent company guarantee. The borrower takes delivery and returns the equivalent metal plus the lease fee. Holders keep full silver exposure and earn the lease income rather than paying to store it.

The gap is widest when silver is scarce, which is when holders have historically earned the least. Central banks hold more than 36,000 tonnes of gold and lend into the market when it tightens. They hold effectively no silver, leaving private metal as the only lendable pool. So the rate moves violently. About 83% of the silver in London vaults sits locked inside physically backed products, leaving roughly 136 million ounces free for trading and leasing, a record low. When that pool tightened, London’s one-month lease rate reached roughly 39% in October 2025 against a historical norm below 1%. The holders of the locked metal earned none of it. Rates have since normalized, and thSLVR is built for the normal market rather than the spike, but the market remains in its sixth consecutive annual supply deficit, projected at 46.3 million ounces for 2026 on flat mine production.

The launch lands as silver has been pressured by expectations of a Federal Reserve rate rise, on the familiar logic that a metal paying no income suffers when cash pays more.

“Every rate decision reminds people that silver pays nothing, and that has always been a fact about market structure rather than about the metal,” said Iggy Ioppe, Chief Investment Officer at Theo. “Holding the asset and holding the trade have been two different products for decades, and the second one never left institutional dealing rooms. A refiner borrowing silver pays for it. thSLVR routes that payment to whoever owns the metal.” thSLVR launches in beta. Access is open to institutions and whitelisted investors through an onboarding process, with broader access to follow.
