TL;DR: The Klaytn Foundation has signed a partnership with Matter Labs to integrate zkSync Era’s Layer 2 scaling solution on Klaytn, marking a significant advancement in blockchain technology. The collaboration aims to enhance scalability, transaction processing time, and gas fees, offering a seamless connection between Klaytn and the Ethereum ecosystem.

Klaytn to build Hyperchain Layer

The Klaytn Foundation, responsible for developing South Korea’s leading Layer 1 blockchain called Klaytn, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Matter Labs, the team behind Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution zkSync Era.

The partnership aims to integrate zkSync Era’s Hyperchain implementations on Klaytn, making it the first blockchain outside Ethereum to feature a Hyperchain Layer powered by ZK-Rollups.

The collaboration will focus on advancing the connectivity between Klaytn’s mainnet and Matter Labs’ zkSync Era Layer 2 blockchain, developing new Layer 2 blockchain technology for Klaytn based on zkSync Era, and establishing Klaytn as a Hyperchain infrastructure using Matter Labs’ ZK Stack.

The partnership between Klaytn Foundation and Matter Labs sets the stage for technical cooperation and aims to exponentially scale the Klatyn ecosystem infrastructure.

By jointly developing Layer 2 and Layer 3 implementations, the two entities plan to address scalability challenges and enhance transaction processing time and gas fees on Klaytn. Matter Labs is known for deploying Zero-Knowledge Proof rollups and recently launched zkSync Era, which supports EVM compatibility.

The company also introduced the ZK Stack, a modular and open-source framework for building custom ZK-powered Layer 2 and Layer 3 solutions.

Dr. Sam Seo, Representative Director of Klaytn Foundation, highlighted the importance of scalability and expressed enthusiasm for the partnership.

He emphasized that working with Matter Labs would accelerate the development of Zero-Knowledge Layer 2 technology for the Klaytn mainnet.

Marco Cora, senior vice president of business and ecosystem at Matter Labs, emphasized the potential of ZK rollups and stated that building on the ZK Stack would provide Layer 1 blockchains like Klaytn with seamless connectivity to the Ethereum ecosystem without compromising security.

By leveraging zkSync Era’s ZK Stack, developers and participants in the Klaytn ecosystem will enjoy lower fees and higher throughput by processing transactions on Layer 2 and Layer 3 hyperchains. Additionally, they will inherit the security of Klaytn by submitting zero-knowledge proofs to the mainnet. This integration opens up new possibilities for builders and users within the Klaytn ecosystem.
