- AquaSave integrates with peaq’s layer-1 blockchain to launch a decentralized water-saving initiative using its AquaBank device.
- The pilot on the Balearic Islands will reward users for conserving water and energy while sharing verified usage data on peaq’s DePIN.
peaq, the layer-1 blockchain powering DePIN and the Machine Economy, announces the expansion of its DePIN ecosystem as AquaSave joins to decentralize water saving.
Originally building on Solana, AquaSave enables anyone to set up its AquaBank device and save on their bills for water and heat. The device also enables the owner to receive rewards for sharing data on their water use as well as for saving water and energy. Integrating peaq as its layer-1 blockchain, AquaSave will leverage it to run its pilot project that will see 240 of its devices deployed on the Balearic islands. It will also deploy some of its most crucial components on peaq, including the reward mechanism.
In the US alone, an average household could waste up to almost 40,000 liters of water per year — and that’s as more than 4 billion people globally lack access to clean water at home. Our water systems need an upgrade; furthermore, they could benefit from more decentralization, from going smarter and more versatile. Optimized water heating and consumption, both on the household level and across various businesses and industries, is a great way to bring the world closer to the dream of sustainability.
AquaSave’s AquaBank device does exactly that. When connected with the piping, it keeps already-heated water in the circulation, reducing the workload on the boiler as well as the water consumption. This enables the user — whether an everyday person or a business — to reduce their water and electricity bills by an estimated 24%. By sharing their water use data with the DePIN, they can also earn rewards in AquaSave’s token. The non-Web3 version of this device, patented by Alfonso Cuervo-Arango, who is part of the AquaSave founding team, has been on the market for about a decade. With AquaSave, the device is now getting an upgrade that will bring it onchain.
With a Climate Award from the Solana Renaissance Hackathon, AquaSave already has 10 pilot AquaBanks up and running. This year, it will also be running an official pilot project with the Balearic islands involving the deployment of 240 AquaBanks across various businesses on the archipelago. The device has also already caught the eyes of Wilo, a major German water pumping manufacturer, which is the distributor of AquaSave’s technology in different countries. Additionally, AquaSave is expanding its reach by partnering with distributors in multiple countries, ensuring that its innovative water-saving technology becomes accessible to businesses, municipalities, and institutions worldwide.
As part of the integration with peaq, AquaSave will create self-sovereign identities on peaq for all of its users, integrating these with its app and DePIN. It will also outfit all devices on the DePIN with their self-sovereign peaq IDs, used to sign the data generated by these devices, which will be recorded on peaq in an accurate and verifiable manner. AquaSave will also launch its native token on peaq and implement its rewards mechanism on the network powering the Machine Economy.
“Sustainability takes all-around transformation, including both households and businesses,” says Sergio Márquez, CEO atCEOat AquaSave. “AquaSave offers this exact approach, ensuring that everyone’s incentives are aligned — everyone can save and earn tokens by helping make the world greener. With its focus on everything real-world and a thriving DePIN and enterprise ecosystem, peaq is the perfect layer-1 for bringing this vision to life.”
“The beauty of the DePIN model is in the perfect convergence of all stakeholders’ interests,” says Leonard Dorlöchter, co-founder of peaq. “AquaSave is a great example of that as it turns sustainability, something that often takes additional investment and effort, into a way to actually cut costs for everyone involved. We are thrilled to see it join the peaq ecosystem and look forward to its launch.”
